conifer's Stagedoor Theater
Location: Conifer, Colorado Seating : 180 seats, two community rooms\ StageDoor Theater Company is a grass roots, non-profit group that has set out to build a new community theater in Conifer, Colorado. The site is the original homestead location built in 1870, which was used as the pony express stop. The Owner of the property intends the site to be developed as the area’s cultural heritage center. The goals of the new theater are to support the historical setting, take advantage of green-systems, and acknowledge the creativity of a rural non-profit community theater. The inspiration for the design came from the lace-like quality of the light that pierces through the historic 1880’s barn interior. The framework of the barn, illuminated by the daylight filtering between the boards, displayed itself with incredible natural beauty. The structure is the modern equivalent of a pole barn using steel and concrete. The donor wall and retaining walls use locally quarried stone to match the adjacent barn. The north three fourth’s of the building uses modular structural insulated panels with corrugated galvanized steel for the exterior skin. The south one fourth is glass modular panels attached to the structure. A “second skin” of locally milled vertical wood plank siding is attached on a framework six inches away from the first skin allowing the metal and glass to show through. As the plank siding reaches the glass panels, they are ‘broken’ away revealing the modern glass structure. A breath taking view of Pikes Peak from the lobby and deck is revealed. The “double skin” system allows for natural convection that reduces the intense heat load by almost half. The mechanical design was able to eliminate forced air cooling due to the combination of the double skin and high venting of the space. The heating is a high efficiency boiler and radiant floor system. The structural insulating panels provide a super insulated enclosure. General building electrical loads are provided by a photo-voltaic system. The onsite pond provides the water storage for the required sprinkler system. The Building currently fulfills the requirements for LEED Silver Certification.
