GRAND EGYPTIAN MUSEUM

The new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) will encompass a state-of-the-art facility delineating all Egyptian periods of history and providing access to current information and future knowledge. The design synthesizes elements from the surrounding monuments and historical artifacts with third millennial technology to provide an unsurpassed museum experience for future visitors.

The main building rises from a square plinth in the footprint of the adjacent pyramids and emerges from the dunes like an ancient ruin. Visitors shall approach the building from the West via a grand colonnade establishing a procession to the main entry following the traditional path from the land of the setting sun to the land of the rising sun. The main building opens to a central light shaft emphasizing the importance of transition from earth to heaven, from death to the life beyond.

A glass torus emerges from the base plinth rising up from the sand as completely modern statement that is yet anchored to the site. The shape of the torus is one of mathematical purity, similar to the pyramids of old, a single-hole three-dimensional ‘ring’ torus is known in older literature as an ‘anchor ring’ The torus will have an opening to the East, South East providing a connection to the land of the rising sun and a view of the pyramids, creating a synergetic relationship between the pyramids and the museum, between earth and heaven.
